About Facelift Surgery
Facelift surgery involves addressing the signs of ageing by repositioning and lifting the soft tissues of the face and neck and the removal of excess skin. Excess fat may also be removed and facial muscles tightened to improve tone.
The aim is to achieve a rejuvenated look.
The soft tissues that are lifted during a facelift are then repositioned and tightened over the cheek and jowl areas, as well as some of the sagging tissues of the neck. This involves placing permanent or long-lasting sutures into these tissues to anchor them in a more favourable location.
With facelift surgeon Dr Lewis Blennerhassett, this surgery is focused on your individual requirements. Depending on your needs, more attention can be given to the jowl area or the neck and less correction in other areas. Combinations of different areas to be improved are common.
The aim is never to have that “overdone” look that we are so familiar with from TV and the tabloid magazines. Most patients just want to look refreshed, not like a different person. They don’t really want other people to know they have had a facelift.

Facelift surgery risks
From the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons - (https://plasticsurgery.org.au/)
Modern surgery is generally safe but does have the potential for risks and complications to occur, states the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Some general risks and complications of surgery may include:
- Heavy bleeding from an operated site
- Infection that may require treatment with antibiotics or further surgery in some cases
- Allergic reaction to sutures, dressings or antiseptic solutions
- The formation of a large blood clot (haematoma) beneath an incision site that may require drainage
- Pain, bruising and swelling around the operated site(s)
- Keloids and hypertrophic scars that are raised, red and thickened scars that may form over the healed incisions. These may be itchy, annoying and unsightly but are not a threat to health
- Slow healing, often related to smoking or diabetes
- Separation of wound edges
- Short-term nausea following general anaesthesia and other risks related to anaesthesia
- Hair loss around the scars, this is usually temporary but sometimes may be permanent
- Loss of skin due to impaired blood supply. This may require a skin graft
- Bruising and swelling
- Numbness around operated sites. In most cases this is temporary and will improve over many months
- Deformity of the earlobe
- Slight difference in appearance between the right and left side of the face
- Damage to the facial nerve, which occurs in about one in every one hundred patients. It can result in partial loss of movement and a “lopsided” appearance of the face. In rare cases, the damage may be permanent
- Revisional surgery may be necessary to correct complications
- Dr Blennerhassett will discuss your individual expectations, risks and recovery management in person.

How long does Facelift Surgery last?
There is significant variability between patients’ long term outcomes based on their own biology. Skin type, elasticity, age of patient, co-existing medical conditions and genetics all play a role in how long the effects of surgery are visible for. Many patients still have noticeable improvement 10 years or more after surgery, but this improvement is not as noticeable as one year after surgery.
