Breast Lift Surgery

Mastopexy
Dr Lewis Blennerhassett  Perth Specialist Plastic Surgeon

What is Breast Lift Surgery?

A breast lift procedure lifts and tightens the breast and addresses loss of elasticity and firmness due to age, gravity, weight change and pregnancy.

Also known as a mastopexy, during the procedure external breast tissue is reshaped, excess skin is removed and the size of the areola (the darker area surrounding the nipple) can be reduced if needed.

It is a standard part of a breast reduction operation, but can also be done without actually reducing the size of the breast. If bigger breast size is required, it can also be performed with breast implant surgery.

During breast lift surgery the nipple and areola are reduced and are shifted higher. The final position is determined pre-operatively with the patient in an upright position. Measurements are carefully made to ensure the nipples are the same height and are symmetrical with the opposite side. Other incisions may vary, depending on the amount of skin to be removed.

Once the skin is excised (removed), the breast tissue is elevated and in many cases is fixed in position in a higher location using permanent sutures.

Commonly used terms – mastopexy, boob lift, saggy breasts.

Why Have Breast Lift Surgery?

Generally, Perth breast lift surgeon Dr Lewis Blennerhassett follows the below guidelines from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.

A breast lift may be a good option for you if:
  • Your breasts are sagging and have lost their shape and firmness
  • Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous (hanging down loosely)
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
  • Your nipples and areolas point downward
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other

Is Breast Lift Surgery Right For You?

This procedure may be suitable if:
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • You are in good health
  • You have realistic expectations
  • You are not breastfeeding or pregnant and are not planning a pregnancy in the near future

There is a small chance of this surgery affecting your ability to breastfeed. If you are worried about this, you should not have mastopexy surgery.

This is general advice for education purposes only. Dr Blennerhassett will discuss your individual expectations, risks and recovery management with you.

Do I Need Breast Implants For Breast Lift Surgery?

When you are wearing a good supportive bra, like a sports bra, are you happy with the size of your breasts?
If you still think your breasts are too small even when they are lifted by a supportive bra, then you may prefer to have implants as well as a breast lift.

If you are generally happy with the size of your breasts when they are held lifted in a supportive bra, then you will generally not require implants.

This is general advice for education purposes only. Dr Blennerhassett will discuss your individual expectations, risks and recovery management with you.

Breast Lift Surgery Risks

From the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (https://plasticsurgery.org.au/)
Modern surgery is generally safe but does have the potential for risks and complications to occur, states the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Some possible complications and risks associated with breast lift surgery may include:
  • Surgical risks such as bleeding or infection
  • Fluid accumulation around the operation site(s)
  • Visible and prominent scars including keloid and hypertrophic scars. These are raised, red and thickened scars that may form over the healed incisions. They may be itchy, annoying and unsightly but are not a threat to health
  • Allergic reaction to suture materials, tape adhesive or other medical materials and lotions
  • Skin discoloration, permanent pigmentation changes, swelling and bruising
  • Fatty tissue deep in the skin could die (fat necrosis) leaving hard lumps
  • Changes in breast and nipple sensation
  • Temporary or permanent areas of numbness
  • Asymmetry (unevenness) of the breasts
  • Excessive firmness of the breast
  • Potential partial or total loss of nipple and areola
  • Need for further surgery to treat complications
  • Risks of anaesthesia including allergic reaction or potentially fatal cardiovascular complications such as heart attack
  • A blood clot in the deep veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis), which can move to the lungs (pulmonary embolus) or to the brain and may be life threatening.
Dr Blennerhassett will discuss your individual expectations, risks and recovery management with you in person.
