What is Breast Lift Surgery?
A breast lift procedure lifts and tightens the breast and addresses loss of elasticity and firmness due to age, gravity, weight change and pregnancy. Also known as a mastopexy, during the procedure external breast tissue is reshaped, excess skin is removed and the size of the areola (the darker area surrounding the nipple) can be reduced if needed. It is a standard part of a breast reduction operation, but can also be done without actually reducing the size of the breast. If bigger breast size is required, it can also be performed with breast implant surgery. |
During breast lift surgery the nipple and areola are reduced and are shifted higher. The final position is determined pre-operatively with the patient in an upright position. Measurements are carefully made to ensure the nipples are the same height and are symmetrical with the opposite side. Other incisions may vary, depending on the amount of skin to be removed.
Once the skin is excised (removed), the breast tissue is elevated and in many cases is fixed in position in a higher location using permanent sutures.
Commonly used terms – mastopexy, boob lift, saggy breasts.
