Breast Lift with Implants Surgery

Perth Specialist Plastic Surgeon

What is Breast Lift with Implants Surgery?

A breast lift procedure lifts and tightens the breast and addresses loss of elasticity and firmness due to age, gravity, weight change and pregnancy. Breast implants are also surgically placed to enlarge the breasts.

With a breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, external breast tissue is reshaped, excess skin is removed and the size of the areola (the darker area surrounding the nipple) can be reduced if needed.

During the surgery, in most cases, the breast implants are inserted first. Once these are inserted and positioned correctly, an accurate assessment can be made regarding the amount of excess skin to be removed, and also an accurate assessment of the nipple repositioning can be made.

Once these measurements are carefully made and re-confirmed, the mastopexy (lift) procedure takes place. This consists of nipple-areolar reduction and repositioning, and skin excision as well as breast repositioning. The incisions are all closed carefully with absorbable (dissolving) sutures.

In Perth, the two main types of breast implants now used are:

Saline implants  – a silicone envelope filled with varying amounts of sterile salt water (saline).

Silicone implants -  a silicone envelope filled with an elastic cohesive gel.

Why Choose to Have Breast Lift with Implants Surgery?

These two surgical breast procedures will address the loss of elasticity and firmness, as well as raising the breast and increasing size.

Perth breast lift surgeon, Dr Lewis Blennerhassett follows the below guidelines from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
A breast lift may be a good option for you if:
  • You feel that your breasts are too small as well as being too low
  • Your breasts are sagging and have lost their shape and firmness
  • Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous (hanging down loosely)
  • When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
  • Your nipples and areolas point downward
  • You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other
  • You are physically healthy
  • You have realistic expectations
  • Your breasts are fully developed

The key things that the breast implants do;
  • Enlarge small breasts
  • Add breast volume after weight loss or pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Even up breasts that are a different size

Breast implant surgery is a personal decision that should be made for you alone and not to meet any society standards or to please someone else.

Breast Implant Types

Shape – round or teardrop etc.

Surface -  smooth vs textured.

Current recommendations are to avoid macro-textured implants of grade 3 or 4 to minimise the risk of complications. Perth breast lift surgeon Dr Lewis Blennerhassett will discuss the updates on this during your first consultation with him.  Read updates on the latest advice on breast implants.

Placement– in front or behind the pectoralis muscle.

During surgery, Perth breast lift surgeon Dr Lewis Blennerhassett places implants either in front or behind the pectoral (chest) muscle. The decision regarding this is made on an individual basis and requires a thorough medical history and physical examination. Your breast shape, breast size and specific aesthetic requirements will determine this.

Neither saline or silicone breast implants are guaranteed to last a lifetime, so implants will need to be removed or replaced at some later stage in almost every patient

Who Should Not Have Breast Lift with Implants Surgery?

The procedure may not be suitable:
  • If you already have large breasts which are too heavy
  • If you are happy with the size of your breasts, just are unhappy with their position
  • If you are planning a pregnancy in the near future

There is a small chance of this surgery affecting your ability to breastfeed. If you are concerned about this, you should not have the surgery.

This is general recovery advice. Dr Blennerhassett will discuss your individual expectations, risks and recovery management with you.
